The Holidays & Your Braces

The holiday countdown is on . . . ready or not.

With the start of the holiday season just a few weeks away, let’s get ready to keep your smile on track and your braces intact with these tips:

Say NO to Chewy, Gooey and Crunchy: Favorites like caramels, candy canes, popcorn and chips are holiday staples ‑ unless you have an orthodontic appliance. If you need feed your sweet tooth, make sure you opt for brace-friendly treats like soft, plain chocolates, peanut butter cups and other melt-in-your-mouth varieties.

Don’t Go Nuts: It may be tempting to grab some of these tasty holiday treats, but they’re definitely on the Naughty List, as they are certain destruction for wires and brackets. Be sure to double check before sinking your teeth into cookies, a slice of pie or a chunk of fudge . . .  they’re known to hide out in these treats.

Drink Plenty of H20: Soft drinks and hot cocoa taste yummy, but their contents can damage teeth. Enjoy them in moderation and rinse with water after drinking. Water will help keep the saliva flowing, keep you hydrated and wash away plaque, sugar and food particles.

Be Prepared: Pack dental floss, a toothbrush, toothpaste, wax if you are traveling for the holidays and be sure to brush 4 times each daybreakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime. Keeping up on your oral hygiene will help keep your teeth and braces sparkling.

Have Happy Holidays with These: Don’t worry, there are plenty of delicious treats you can enjoy this holiday without worrying about your wires and brackets . . .

  • Pudding and Jell-O
  • Pumpkin pie
  • Soft chocolates
  • Ice Cream
  • Dinner rolls
  • Turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy and stuffing
  • Cranberry sauce or sliced fruit
