Whether it’s for your child — or yourself — the start of orthodontic treatment can spark all kinds of questions:
- Isn’t my child too young to see the orthodontist?
- How much will it cost?
- How long will it take?
- Am I too old for braces?
- What about my insurance?
The word “braces” can be intimidating for parents and children alike, but the good news is that with advancements in technology, techniques and products, starting orthodontic treatment is more convenient and life changing than ever before.
Age 7. This number may surprise many, but the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children have their first visit no later than 7 years old. It’s at this age that most children have enough permanent teeth, so the orthodontist can address an existing or developing problem. They’ll be looking at jaw structure, erupting teeth and possible need for early orthodontic treatment — which will guide the growth of facial and jaw bones and provide the space needed for incoming teeth.
If you’ve missed the age 7 window . . . don’t worry. We still get amazing outcomes and create healthy and happy smiles at any age!
Each smile has different alignment needs, so it is hard to give an answer that is true for all patients. You may need braces anywhere from 6 to 30 months, though most treatments last an average of 22 months. During your complimentary consultation, we’ll review these details and customize your treatment plan — all based on your needs and goals.
Associated Orthodontists is a participating provider with most major insurance carriers, and when you call to schedule your complimentary consultation, we will collect your information to verify and coordinate your insurance benefits. Each patient’s orthodontic needs will differ, so treatment cost will also differ. Associated Orthodontists will evaluate your specific alignment needs, and our team will create a cost analysis and present several convenient payment options — including 0% financing. We fully explain your insurance benefits and all costs before starting orthodontic treatment. There will be no hidden fees and you will have all the payment information before braces are put on.
Don’t worry — braces are not generally painful. You may experience some slight tenderness for several days at the beginning of your treatment as your teeth, mouth, jaw and gums adjust to your new braces.
GOOD NEWS! Braces won’t stop you from playing the clarinet or hitting the football field. When it comes to instruments, you just may need to practice to get used to the feeling of playing with braces. (This adjustment period will be well worth it, because you’ll be on your way to a straighter, more attractive smile!) To protect your teeth, braces, lips and gums during sports, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND wearing a mouth guard. AND, we are happy to provide one for you – just give us a call or ask for one at your next visit!
Unlike the “traditional” braces many remember from their younger years, products like Damon System® Braces allow for simpler and faster treatment. This system has eliminated time-consuming and complicated procedures, delivering a beautiful smile months and months sooner. Plus, its design requires less adjustments so appointments can be spaced out, and the appliances are discreet, comfortable and easy to keep clean, making it the perfect option.
Invisalign® is a popular choice for teens and adults wanting a beautiful smile without the use of traditional metal braces. This cutting-edge product straightens teeth by using a series of custom-made, invisible liners that gradually and gently shift teeth into place. The best part of this system is that it is virtually invisible to other people, and because the trays are removable, oral care is easier and there are no restrictions on diet.
Straightening your teeth with orthodontic appliances will ultimately give you a straight, beautiful smile. However, the benefits of braces reach well beyond the aesthetic benefits — healthier teeth and gums, teeth that are easier to clean, prevention of jaw problems, improved confidence and improved overall health.
